(New York-AP) -- Attorney General John Ashcroft would only go so far.
For weeks, David Letterman has poked fun at a video clip of Ashcroft singing a song he wrote called ``Let the Eagles Soar.''
Ashcroft appeared on Letterman's ``Late Show'' Tuesday night. He declined an invitation to sing, but did play the piano -- banging out the Beatles'``Can't Buy Me Love.'' Ashcroft said it was his tribute to Paul McCartney, who -- like himself -- turns 60 this year.
Before their comic banter, Letterman and Ashcroft engaged in a serious discussion about national security.
