(Memphis-AP) -- Memphis wrestler Jerry Lawler has smacked down the World Wrestling Federation.

Lawler says he's quit the W-W-F and its football league, the X-F-L, after the federation fired his wife.

The wrestling star and television wrestling commentator says he was called into a meeting with W-W-F officials on Tuesday in Tucson, Arizona. He says he was told to inform his wife, Stacy Carter, she was no longer employed.

Carter is known professionally as The Kat. She had had been an on-air personality and occasional wrestler with the W-W-F.

Lawler says he told the federation he would tell Carter she had been fired on the way to Memphis because he was going as well.

He says he hasn't heard from the federation since.

W-W-F and X-F-L officials refused comment on the situation yesterday.

Lawler is also known as the wrestler who slapped the late comedian Andy Kaufman on the David Letterman show in 1982. He ran unsuccessfully in 1999 for mayor of Memphis.
