John Ramsey Surprises Burglar

ATLANTA (AP) â€” John Ramsey, the father of slain 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey, surprised a burglar in his home Tuesday and fought with the man before the intruder fled, his lawyer said.

Attorney Lin Wood said Ramsey was not seriously injured and was able to call police minutes after the intruder left. Wood said Ramsey saw the man leaving with two large bags but didn't know what was in them.

``Mr. Ramsey has a gun vault, and we suspect that some weapons were taken,'' said Deputy Police Chief C.B. Jackson.

Jackson said Ramsey was locked in a bathroom but was able to free himself and call police. No one else was at home at the time.

Ramsey ``got a good look at the man,'' Wood said.

Both Wood and Atlanta police spokesman John Quigley said they didn't know if the intruder knew Ramsey was the father of JonBenet, who was killed in her Boulder, Colo., home in 1996. Her parents moved to Atlanta after the slaying.

The Ramseys remain under suspicion in their daughter's death. They have said they believe an intruder killed the girl.
