(Verdigris-AP) -- Officials in one the state's smallest and youngest communities think their town is off on solid footing after voters nearly unanimously passed a two-cent sales tax tonight.

Voters in the Rogers County town of Verdigris approved by a 57-to-1 margin money for town improvements and operations.

The vote was conducted under the state's Town Meeting Act and was finished within an hour of its 7 p-m start.

The town of about 350 people was organized in 1980 about six miles south of Claremore on historic Route 66.

Town clerk Susan Beck says there's just one retail business in the town, but that officials will start collecting the sales tax there on March First.
