Schools superintendent wants examination of teacher hiring practices

(Oklahoma City-AP) -- The state schools superintendent wants an examination of the hiring practices of Oklahoma school districts.

Sandy Garrett's proposal to the state Board of Education comes after concerns that some school officials are not doing enough to keep bad teachers out of the classroom.

Garrett said yesterday that she's also concerned that some school officials are not reporting alleged child abuse to state officials.

Garrett proposes an Internet-based system requiring superintendents to report all firings.

The information would also be open to the public.
