(McAlester-AP) -- It was standing room only at the state Department of Human Services office in McAlester this morning as residents apply for special disaster food stamps.
Pittsburg County D-H-S Director Joe Bray estimates between two- and three-hundred people were at the office to apply for the special program. It's intended to help those who suffered losses because of the Christmas Day ice storm.
The special disaster food stamp program has expanded income restrictions for food stamp eligibility. The amounts of food lost due to power outages can be deducted from income totals.
Applications will be taken from 8:00 AM til 5:00 PM through Friday, and again from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
