PASADENA, Calif. (AP) â€” Heartthrob actor Mel Gibson was honored twice Sunday night at the People's Choice Awards.

Gibson won for Motion Picture Star in a Drama and the more general Motion Picture Actor category. The 45-year-old Gibson beat out Tom Hanks, 44, and Denzel Washington, 46, who also were nominated in both categories.

Gibson's ``The Patriot,'' Hanks' ``The Green Mile,'' and Washington's ``Remember the Titans'' dominated the movie categories with each gaining nominations for Motion Picture and Dramatic Motion Picture. ``The Green Mile'' won the awards in both categories.

Veteran big-screen star Bette Midler won a People's Choice award for Female Performer in a New Television Series. The other nominees were Jessica Alba of ``Dark Angel'' and Geena Davis for her work in ``The Geena Davis Show.''

John Goodman also won for his performance in a new television series, but his show ``Normal, Ohio'' already has been canceled.

The NBC hospital series ``ER'' won best television drama for the eighth consecutive year.

The awards also included three categories that were determined by Internet voting. Those categories included New Television Comedy Series, New Television Dramatic Series and Reality-Based Television Program.

The 27th Annual People's Choice Awards was held at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. The ceremony was the first of the year's many awards shows, which include the American Music Awards, Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.

Nominees and winners were selected by a Gallup Organization poll. Organizers of the ceremony did not specify how many people were polled.
