(Tulsa-AP) -- A December poll finds most Oklahomans believe the death penalty is a deterrent to crime.

The poll by Tulsa-based Consumer Logic for the Tulsa World found 63 percent of those questioned either strongly agree, or somewhat agree that capital punishment deters other criminals.

Sixty-eight percent of the men in the survey and 59 percent of women agreed with the statement.

Seventy-two percent who agree that the death penalty deters crime identify themselves as Republicans, 60 percent say they're Democrats.

The statewide survey of 750 registered voters has a margin of error of three-and-a-half percent.
