WASHINGTON (AP) — A Michigan company is recalling about 370,000 plastic squirting fish included in bath toy sets after receiving reports of infants choking on the toys.
Sassy Inc., of Kentwood, Mich., knows of three infants who put the toy fish in their mouths — one gagged and vomited and the others started to choke, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.
The fish's size and construction make it possible for infants to compress the toy and place it in their mouths. If the toy reaches the back of the mouth and expands, it may block the child's airway.
The recalled squirting fish have yellow and orange bodies with white polka dots and stripes on their fins. Some of the fish have light blue fins, while others have purple fins, the company said on its Web site.
The toys were included in two bath toy sets.
The Scoop Pour 'N Squirt bath toy set has a large, colorful plastic fish-shaped scoop with a green textured handle and a spout for pouring water. This set comes with two small plastic squirting fish.
The Bath Time Pals bath toy set comes with one squirting frog, two squirting pearls and two squirting fish.
Mass merchandise stores and toy stores sold the toy sets nationwide from February 1999 to December 2000 for about $5.
The safety commission advises consumers to take the squirting fish immediately away from young children and throw them away. To receive replacement squirt toys people can contact Sassy at 1-800-764-8323.
