(McAlester-AP) -- Water and power has been restored to most of McAlester, where a state of emergency was declared yesterday.
However, about 20-thousand residents in outlying areas of Pittsburg County are still without power and may not get electricity for between three and seven days.
Most of McAlester's residents went more than 16 hours without lights, heat or telephones.
Emergency Management Director Billy Mellor says six shelters are in place throughout the county after several homes caught fire because of downed power lines.
Mellor says the situation is improving and things are about as good as can be expected.
