MIAMI – The undefeated Oklahoma Sooners will meet BCS #2 Florida State (11-1) in the 2001 FedEx Orange Bowl on January 3, 2001 at Pro Player Stadium.

This will be the 17th trip to South Florida for the Sooners. Oklahoma has played in 16 previous Orange Bowls, more than any other team, but has not been here since 1988. The Sooners have posted an 11-5 mark in the OB, including four National Championship games. OU won three national titles at the Orange Bowl, 1956 (Oklahoma 20, Maryland 6), 1976 (Oklahoma 14, Michigan 6), 1986 (Oklahoma 25, Penn State 10), with its only defeat coming from Miami (20-14) in 1988.vThis will be the third time in Orange Bowl history that Oklahoma will face Florida State. The two previously met in back-to-back games in 1980 and 1981.

The defending national champion Seminoles won their other three previous visits to the FedEx Orange Bowl, defeating Nebraska twice in 1993 and 1994 and Notre Dame in the 1996 Bowl. Florida State’s 18-16 victory over Nebraska in 1994 earned them a National Championship title and featured FSU’s only Heisman Trophy winner, Charlie Ward.
