Son of late baseball great dies in Dallas

(Dallas-AP) -- His family today announced the death of Mickey Mantle Junior in a Dallas hospital.

The oldest son of late baseball great Mickey Mantle died today of complications from cancer.

Mickey Mantle Junior was 47.

Mickey Mantle died of liver cancer in Dallas in August of 1995.

He was 63.

Mantle Junior was born in Joplin, Missouri. He had played professional baseball, spending several years in the minors for the New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers.

Mantle Junior later worked with his siblings at the Mickey Mantle Foundation.

He's survived by his daughter Mallory, his mother Merlyn, and his brothers Danny and David, all of Dallas.

A private ceremony is planned in Dallas. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
