LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Lawrence Phillips, a former NFL and Nebraska running back, was sentenced to six months in jail after pleading no contest to beating up his girlfriend.

Phillips, who had a no-bail arrest warrant issued for him on Tuesday after failing to appear for trial, pleaded no contest Wednesday to felony counts of beating the woman and making a terrorist threat, said Sandi Gibbons of the district attorney's office.

He was arrested May 27 after police were called to his Beverly Hills home.

Superior Court Judge Bernard Kamins also placed Phillips, 25, on three years' probation and ordered him to undergo anger management training. He gave him until April 26 to report to jail.

A first-round draft choice by St. Louis in 1996, Phillips played 25 games for the Rams before being released for insubordination. His 19 months with the team were marked by three arrests and 23 days in jail for violating probation after a drunken-driving arrest in California.

He subsequently was signed by the Miami Dolphins, but was released after pleading no contest to hitting a woman in a bar.

The San Francisco 49ers signed him after he revived his career with outstanding play in Europe last year, but then cut him for missing practice.

The running back also pleaded no contest to domestic violence while in college in a case involving a confrontation with a girlfriend.
