(Howe-AP) -- The Howe police chief suffered a minor leg injury Tuesday when he was hit by a Howe police car.

Officers say they were struggling to get leg restraints on a man in the front seat of the patrol car when the man managed to put the car in gear. The car then rolled into Police Chief Don Williams Senior.

Officer Marcel Livesay says officers were to take the man to a McAlester mental health facility when the incident occurred. Livesay says it's standard procedure to transport mental patients in the front seat of patrol cars.

Williams was treated and released at Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center.

Howe is in LeFlore County, south of Poteau.
