(New York-AP) -- It could be argued that last night's lesson to 28-year-old Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke is that ``Good things come to all those who wait.''
Weinke's age didn't matter, but his sensational season did, as Weinke won the Heisman Trophy in New York in one of the closest votes in the history of the award.
By just 76 points, Weinke edged Oklahoma quarterback Josh Heupel for college football's most coveted individual prize.
It was the seventh tightest Heisman race, with the closest Heisman vote Bo Jackson's 45-point victory over Chuck Long 15 years ago.
In recent weeks, Weinke's age became a huge issue, one that even worried the 6-foot-5, 229-pound quarterback from St. Paul, Minnesota.
Weinke this season led the nation with a school-record four thousand-167 yards passing, threw 33 touchdown passes and had just 11 interceptions.
He also managed to recover from a serious neck injury late in the 1998 season to become the Atlantic Coast Conference's career passing leader with nine thousand-839 yards.
