LOS ANGELES (AP) â€” Hollywood filmmakers get a chance for still another attaboy.

With Oscar and Golden Globe races heating up and other hardware handout rituals coming up, the American Film Institute announced Monday that it's celebrating 21st century films with a Top 10 list.

AFI Movies of the Year â€” the 10 most outstanding films of 2000 â€” will be announced Jan. 9 along with up to five AFI Moments of Significance relating to film, television, video, the Internet, digital and other forms of moving image.

AFI's best film list, assembled in alphabetical order, will honor each film's creative team with plaques.

``We are honoring the projects as a whole, and, therefore, paying tribute to all the key people who have contributed to the outstanding films of the year,'' AFI board Chairman Tom Pollock said.

The Moments of Significance cover a wide range of accomplishment.

``Recognition may be for accomplishments of considerable merit, influences with either a positive or negative impression, trends, either new or re-emerging, anniversaries or memorials of special note, and/or movements in television, new technologies, education, preservation, government or other areas that impact the art of the moving image,'' AFI Director Jean Picker Firstenberg said.

Thirteen people nominating and deciding the AFI honors each year will include a chairman, three filmmakers, three film historians, three film critics and three AFI trustees. Their names will remain anonymous. The public can also nominate favorites through the Internet.
