OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ With Big 12 Conference football championship tickets scarce, Nebraska fans may be the best source for Oklahomans wanting to attend Saturday's game.
Thinking Nebraska would have another championship season, hundreds of Cornhusker fans bought tickets when they went on sale Oct. 3. The Kansas City Chiefs' ticket office reported more than 19,000 tickets were sold on the first day, with most going to fans in Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Texas and Oklahoma.
Four of those states had teams in title contention, with Missouri home to the title game. At the time, Nebraska was undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the country.
When Kansas State beat Nebraska and the University of Oklahoma defeated Texas Tech two weeks ago, Nebraska fans were left holding tickets that were worthless _ to them.
Many tickets were transferred to travel agencies, and many could be found on the Internet auction site eBay. Of more than 200 items offering Big 12 championship tickets, nearly 50 came from Nebraska.
OU and Kansas State received an allotment of 8,000 tickets each from the Big 12 office. But many regular season ticket holders still were left without a ticket.
Kirby Hocutt, OU director of athletic development, said tickets were divided up mainly to five groups. The first 1,500 were set aside for OU students. Next came the team's coaches and players, leaving 5,300 tickets.
The remaining tickets went to priority members of the Sooner Club, Bud Wilkinson Society and the Golden Sooner Circle.
