(New York-AP) -- The New York Jets have waived former Oklahoma State star Kevin Williams.

Williams was the Jets third-round draft pick in 1998 and spent part of this season as the Jets starting safety. He was also New York's primary kickoff returner and ranked third in the A-F-C with an average of more than 26 yards per return.

Williams missed much of last season while battling a near-fatal throat infection
