Two people were killed Monday evening when their training aircraft crashed northeast of Jones-Riverside Airport as the pilot tried to make an emergency landing.

The pilot had radioed the airport's control tower to report an engine fire in one of the aircraft's two engines. The plane made its approach to the airport from the south as the pilot apparently tried to make a turn to head back into the southerly wind to land, but
the plane banked sharply into an eastern turn, and crashed into a muddy field just after 6:15 PM.

Student pilot David Imboden, who had landed his plane just moments earlier, witnessed the crash. He told The News on Six that he saw an indication of an engine fire. Tulsa police sergeant Wayne Allen confirmed two people were killed in the crash, but the names of the victims have not been released.

Authorities have secured the perimeter of the crash site to await federal investigators.
