(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Oklahoma City police have released the name of a man shot to death by a police officer.

Twenty-six-year old Joe Dewayne Gillispie was killed yesterday by a single shot to the head fired by Sergeant Darrell Fortune.

A police spokeswoman says Fortune and Sergeant Peggy Boismier were responding to a reported burglary in progress when they saw Gillispie breaking into the residence.

Sergeant Cris Cunningham says Gillispie fought with the two officers as they tried to arrest him, then grabbed Boismier and began choking her.

Fortune says he first used pepper spray to try and stop Gillispie, then shot the suspect because he feared that Boismier would be killed.
