WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Two Virginia teen-agers who abandoned their baby in a portable toilet have pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Jose E. Ocampo, 18, and Abigail V. Caliboso, 19, cried Tuesday as they entered their pleas in Superior Court and agreed to accept five-year prison terms.

The couple was afraid to tell their families about the baby because of their Catholic upbringing, defense attorneys said.

After Caliboso gave birth in a Virginia motel to an 8-pound baby girl, she and Ocampo, a high school senior, drove to Delaware on March 26. Caliboso, a freshman at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., nursed the baby before wrapping her in a blanket and leaving her in the toilet.

Defense attorneys said the couple expected someone to find the child alive the next morning. But a construction worker found the baby dead about 12 hours later.

The judge ordered a presentence investigation and put off a final decision on whether to accept the five-year prison sentences.
