MIAMI, Okla. (AP) -- A Wyandotte man accused in the death of his girlfriend's daughter was scheduled to make a court appearance Thursday on charges of first-degree murder and caretaker abuse.
Jason Robbins, 22, was returned from Jasper County, Mo., to the Ottawa County Jail on Wednesday. Robbins was arrested Friday evening after Destiny J. Williby was hospitalized. The 1-year-old child was pronounced dead at 8:02 a.m. Saturday at a Missouri hospital, authorities said.
According to reports from the Ottawa County Sheriff's office, Miami police received a call for an ambulance in Wyandotte for treatment of a baby who had fallen. Emergency crews on arrival called for a helicopter to transport the child to a hospital in Joplin and then Springfield, Mo.
Hospital personnel found a soft spot on the girl's head and bruises on her body, so they suspected that she was a victim of child abuse, a statement released by the sheriff's office read.
According to authorities, the child's mother, Crystal Martin, had walked to a nearby convenience store, leaving Robbins to feed the baby.
Authorities said Robbins told them he had gone to the bathroom and returned to the living room to find Destiny standing on the couch.
Robbins said he yelled at her and she fell off, hitting her head.
