Man charged in parents death

(Poteau-AP) -- A 27-year-old LeFlore County man has been charged with first-degree murder in the weekend slaying of his parents.

Authorities say Laven H. Kent called the sheriff's office early Sunday and said he'd killed his parents. Court records show that he reportedly led them to his home in the Poker Bend community near Panama, where the bodies of George and Margie Kent were found.

Both appeared to have been shot in the head at close range.

George Kent was found in a chair in the back room of the residence.

Margie Kent's body was found in a bed. Records show that a .38-caliber pistol was found on the floor near the bed.

Authorities say Laven Kent is under a suicide watch pending a court-ordered transfer to Eastern State Hospital at Vinita for a mental evaluation.
