(Tulsa-AP) -- A Tulsa man was killed while crossing an intersection in a motorized wheelchair.

Tulsa police say James ``Jimmy'' Fields was crossing an intersection when he was hit by a large commercial truck which had turned onto the street.

A witness says the driver never saw Fields and stopped as soon as he hit him. Fields was pronounced dead at Hillcrest Medical Center. It was Fields 37th birthday.

He lived at the nearby Murdock Villa apartment complex. Garry Baker is president of the Murdock Villa Resident Association.

He says the intersection is wheelchair alley. About 70 percent of the residents use wheelchairs.

He says although motorized wheelchairs are common in the area, motorists haven't seemed to take any extra caution.

Baker and other residents will seek a meeting with Tulsa's mayor and traffic control officials to discuss improvements that could make crossing the intersection safer.
