Louisiana Tech (1-4) at Tulsa (2-2)
TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ Junior tailback Ken Bohanon pounded away for a career-high 178 yards and a touchdown and Chris Earnest pushed his season mark to 10-of-10 with three field goals as Tulsa held off turnover-prone Louisiana Tech 22-10 Saturday night.

The Hurricane evened its record at 2-2 by snapping a six-game home losing streak and winning consecutive games in the same season for the first time since the opening two games of the 1998 season.

Louisiana Tech (1-4) had four turnovers, including two deep in Tulsa territory. The Bulldogs, who will join Tulsa in the Western Athletic Conference next year, have 21 turnovers in five games after just 22 throughout the 1999 season.

True freshman quarterback Luke McCown replaced ineffective redshirt freshman Maxie Causey at halftime with Louisiana Tech trailing 16-0. He drove the Bulldogs 71 yards to a field goal on his first possession and passed 10 yards for a touchdown to John Simon to cut the lead to 16-10 with 1:40 remaining in the third quarter.

That score followed a blocked punt that Tech recovered at the Tulsa 16-yard line.

The Bulldogs drove to the Tulsa 16 on their next possession, but a muffed snap and a sack pushed them back to the 33, where Josh Scobee missed a 50-yard field goal.

Tulsa then drove 67 yards for the clinching touchdown, scored on a 1-yard lunge by Bohanon, who fumbled as he leaped into the end zone. Officials ruled he had possession as he broke the plane.

Tulsa capitalized on three Bulldog turnovers in building the 16-0 first-half lead. Harold Burgess returned an interception 41 yards to the Bulldog 31 to set up a 37-yard field goal by Earnest to put TU ahead 3-0.

Louisiana Tech's deepest penetration of the half ended when Corey Addison fumbled. Chad Smith recovered the ball at the TU 11. Tulsa then drove 89 yards in 17 plays, led by the power running of Bohanon, who had nine carries for 71 yards in the drive.

The score came on a fourth-and-goal at the 4. Tulsa faked the swinging gate formation and Blankenship found Corey Brown in the corner of the end zone. Two subsequent Tulsa drives ended in field goals of 31 and 38 yards by Earnest.

Both teams entered with reputations for high-powered passing attacks, but stuck close to the ground.

Tulsa, which had not rushed for more than 73 yards in three previous games, finished with 177, while Louisiana Tech, which led the nation in passing yards the last two seasons, had 196 rushing and 141 passing.

Tulsa quarterback Josh Blankenship completed 14 of 28 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown. His favorite target, wide receiver Donald Shoals, had four catches for 46 yards in the first half, but missed the second half with bruised ribs.

Simon had 21 carries for 128 yards for the Bulldogs. McCown completed 9 of 13 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. Causey hit just 5 of 11 for 40 yards with two interceptions.
