(Stillwater-AP) -- A Stillwater city commission has been appointed mayor to fill the vacancy left by death of Michaele ``Mike'' Henson.

City Commissioner Larry R-Brown was appointed mayor tonight during a commission meeting. His appointment will go through April Two-thousand-and-one, when residents will elect someone to fill the remaining two years of Henson's unexpired term.

Brown is a Southwestern Bell external affairs manager. He was first appointed commissioner in 1988 to fill the vacancy left when Henson was elected mayor. He was elected to the commission in 1989 and 1992.

He left the commission in 1995 and later lost a race for mayor against Henson in 1997. He was elected to the commission again in 1999.

The 67-year-old Henson was serving her third term as Stillwater mayor when she died in a Tulsa hospital of toxic reaction to chemotherapy for leukemia.
