IRVING, Texas-Dallas quarterback Troy Aikman, knocked out of the season opener with his ninth concussion, will not play in Sunday's game at Arizona.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the decision was made Wednesday after three days of medical evaluations both from the team's own training staff and outside physicians.
"It was a very informed and through decision," Jones said.
No timetable has been established for the return of Aikman, who Jones said was still experiencing some headaches Wednesday. He sustained the mild concussion in the season-opening 41-14 loss to Philadelphia.
"He is not free of headache-type symptoms, but not any, frankly, that he could not go out and play in the game," Jones said. "This is the right decision, for both Troy and the team."
Jones said Aikman was disappointed with the decision, but understood the reasons.
Randall Cunningham will start in Aikman's place against the Cardinals.
