EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Southern Cal gave Penn State a dose of its own smash-mouth football.

The 15th-ranked Trojans had 164 rushing yards, and scored on defense and special teams in a 29-5 victory over No. 22 Penn State on Sunday in the Kickoff Classic.

Sultan McCullough rushed for 128 yards for a USC team ranked seventh in the Pac-10 in rushing last season.

Carson Palmer, whose season ended with a broken collarbone last year, was 10-of-20 for 87 yards.

Penn State was held to just 6 yards rushing in its worst season-opening loss since a 44-6 defeat against Nebraska in the 1983 Kickoff Classic.

Ga. Tech-Va. Tech postponed

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Georgia Tech-Virginia Tech game was postponed by game and school officials after severe thunderstorms and lightning rolled into the area just as the teams were lined up for the opening kickoff. No makeup date had been scheduled.
