(Irving-AP) -- Kevin Smith's agent says the Dallas Cowboys cornerback probably won't return to the team.

Agent Steve Zucker tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that a final decision on retirement isn't imminent. But he all but ruled out any possibility of Smith's return as a player.

The nine-year veteran left the Cowboys about two weeks ago to contemplate retirement because of a congenital degenerative disk in his lower back.

Zucker says Smith wants to do anything he can to help the Cowboys find a replacement, including allowing himself to be put on "a reserve list" to free up a roster spot and clear salary cap room.

Smith's salary for this season is expected to be 750-thousand dollars.

Owner Jerry Jones has reminded Smith of an offer to join the Cowboys organization -- probably as a coach.
