(Salt Lake City-AP) -- Salt Lake City's mayor has a proposal to make crossing streets safer for pedestrians and help the city shed its reputation as one of the deadliest in the nation for pedestrians.
The city plans to place bright orange flags at the most dangerous intersections. Wary pedestrians can grab a flag and wave it at oncoming traffic. Mayor Rocky Anderson hopes that'll be enough to make drivers come to a halt and allow a safe crossing.
Anderson says he's sometimes felt like he's taking his life into his hands while crossing streets.
According to a government report, Salt Lake is the 12th most dangerous metro area for walkers, with 60 killed between 1997 and 1998.
