Raleigh, N.C.(AP)--An ambulance carrying a Wake Forest police
officer, who was wounded in a shooting that left one woman dead,
struck a car on U.S. 1, killing two motorists.

The sequence of events that ended with three people dead began
Sunday night when an officer, identified by a Wake Forest town
official as Matt May, responded to a domestic quarrel outside a
town gas station. The officer approached a car in which a man and
woman were sitting, said Wake Forest Police Chief Greg Harrington.

"When the officer arrived, he tried to take the female out of
the vehicle to talk to her, but before she got out of the vehicle,
she was shot," Harrington said. The bullet ricocheted and hit the
officer in the hand.

The male suspect was taken into custody, Harrington said.

The ambulance taking the officer to Wake Medical Center in
Raleigh collided with a red Toyota about 10 p.m. on U.S. 1 in north
Raleigh, officials said. Two people inside the car were killed, the
Raleigh Fire Department confirmed. The officer was not seriously
injured in the wreck.

The names of the accident and shooting victims and the male
suspect were not available late Sunday.
