(Norman-AP) -- A Midwest City football standout is returning to his first love after four years in baseball's minor leagues.
Vernon Maxwell is about to begin his freshman season at the University of Oklahoma. He says he hopes to make an impact on the Sooners' secondary. History says he very well could.
Maxwell was a multisport star at Midwest City just more than four years ago. In addition to becoming football standout, Maxwell hit .364 in his senior season as a baseball star.
The San Diego Padres drafted Maxwell in the second round. He says he's glad to have had the minor league experience but is ready to return to football.
He spent much of the spring relearning old skills and adjusting to the college game. He's also spent much of the off-season trying to get his body ready for football.
