JAY, Okla. (AP) -- A man was shot by a police officer the man allegedly attacked after a high-speed chase.

Authorities said Russell Hogshooter, 33, was hospitalized inJ oplin, Mo., on Saturday after a bullet lodged in his arm and fragmented into his chest and chin.

Jay police Officer Tracy Sixkiller tried to stop Hogshooter around 3 a.m. Saturday for not having a valid state tag on his vehicle, authorities said.

But police said Hogshooter sped away and later crashed his car into a tree on Oklahoma 20.

Kym Koch, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, said Sixkiller then asked Hogshooter and two others in the car to get out, but they refused.

Authorities said Sixkiller had placed passenger Belinda Chewey on the ground when he was allegedly hit in the back of the head by Hogshooter.

Police said the officer then shot Hogshooter in the arm. Charges against Hogshooter were pending.

Chewey, 27, was treated for injuries in the wreck and was being held in Delaware County Jail for allegedly attacking Sixkiller. A juvenile passenger had not been charged.
