(Tulsa-AP) -- A former Olympic weightlifting champion is being honored for his efforts to improve the lives of the blind.

Tonight, Jim Stovall will receive the 2000 Humanitarian Award from Lions Club International.

Stovall went completely blind at age 29, and a year later began the Narrative Television Network. The 12-hundred-affiliate network adds descriptive voice lines to make old movies and T-V shows accessible to the blind.

Based in Tulsa, the network received an Emmy in 1990 outstanding contributions to the television industry.

The honor for "outstanding humanitarian achievement" is the organization's most prestigious award. Past recipients includeformer President Carter, Mother Teresa and former first lady Nancy Reagan.
