(Proctor-AP) -- Voters in the precinct of Proctor in Adai County will try to establish the old community as a town Tuesday.

Linda Canada is secretary of the Proctor betterment committee and a third generation resident. Canada says passage of the issue won't raise taxes, but will increase the quality of life in the community and help retain Proctor's history.

One hundred of the 213 registered voters signed a petition to get the Adair County Commission to hold the special election.

Proctor is northwest of Stilwell near the Cherokee County line. It became an Oklahoma town in the 1840s but was never officially organized. The post office opened in 1902.

If the township proposal passes tomorrow, an election of board members will follow.
