(Hartford, Arkansas-AP) -- By day, Dale Traylor is police chief in Howe, Oklahoma. But come nightfall, he'll move across the border and serve as temporary police chief in Hartford, Arkansas.

The Hartford City Council hired Traylor Wednesday. The appointment came after a brouhaha earlier in the week between Chief Tommy Hoopengarner and Mayor Aaron Fildes.

During an argument Tuesday, Hoopengarner arrested Fildes, handcuffed him, and took him to the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center in Fort Smith, planning to charge him. When they arrived at the center, Fildes told investigators he had fired Hoopengarner and asked for his car keys. Hoopengarner says the mayor didn't tell him he was fired. Hoopengarner didn't file charges.
