Publisher, former Nowata mayor dies

(Oologah-AP) -- Former Nowata Mayor John Kester is dead at the age of 57. Kester died Monday.

He was a publisher and photographer in addition to being apolitical figure. He owned the Tri-State Tribune at Picher. He once owned the Catoosa Times, but had sold it.

Kester was active in the Democratic Party and served on the Nowata City Council. He was mayor of Nowata from May 1983 to June 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn, a daughter, a son, his mother and three grandchildren.
