WATTS, Okla. (AP) -- Watts city leaders say they're not rushing to take action against the city's police commissioner, who pleaded no contest to operating an illegal pyramid scheme.

Mayor Roy Hammers said he supports Gary Fain, who also serves as Watts city director. Hammers said Fain has done a good job running the town.

Fain pleaded no contest Thursday in Adair County District Court to felony counts of conspiracy and promoting the "Friends Helping Friends" investment scheme.

He also is a member of the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission and an 18-year veteran with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. His four-year contract as Watts police commissioner runs until August 2001.

City Councilor Lisa Tennison said she wants to wait until sentencing in July before deciding Fain's future.

Fain was indicted by a multi county grand jury for his role in the illegal pyramid scheme in September 1998.
