TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Tulsa's old Federal Courthouse is among six sites that have been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The courthouse was built in 1915 and extensively remodeled in recent years. It remains "one of the most visually exciting parts of the city," said Steve Kline, the historic preservationist who nominated the building for the register.

"Tulsa is very lucky not to have lost this gem," said Kline, regional preservationist for the federal General Service Administration, which owns the courthouse. "Now I think it's going to be around for a very, very long time."

Also added to the register Tuesday were the Muskogee Federal Courthouse, the Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in McAlester, the Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Lawton, El Reno HighS chool and the El Reno Municipal Pool Bathhouse.

Oklahoma now has 948 places on the nationwide list of historic places.

The newest additions are part of the state Historic Preservation Office's "1,000 in 2000" project, aiming to have that many places on the register by the end of this year.

"These sites would be important to preserve just for their architecture and beauty," said Jim Gabbert, the administrator for Oklahoma's National Register sites. "But they are very important parts of our history, too. These are buildings that helped make our communities what they are today."
