OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A federal grand jury indictment accuses the son of a former state education chancellor of trying to defraud MidFirst Bank.

The single-count indictment filed Tuesday against E. Thomas Dunlap Jr., 55, accuses him of providing the bank with a promissory note that contained the forged signature of his father, E.T. Dunlap. The elder Dunlap, who has since died, was a former chancellor of the State Regents for Higher Education.

The bank required the younger Dunlap to get the co-signature of his father on the note before agreeing to give him the $50,050 loan.

Dunlap also is accused of presenting the bank with a false financial statement that he represented as being his father's.

Last week, a grand jury in Tulsa indicted Dunlap on 23 counts alleging he used for his own purposes money that people had paid in advance for funerals.

That indictment charges Dunlap with wire fraud, bank fraud, unlawful monetary transactions and committing fraud that induced interstate travel.

In 1998, the Oklahoma State Board of Embalmers voted to revoke Dunlap's embalming and funeral director's licenses after allegations surfaced that he had embezzled about $1 million in prepaid funeral funds.
