The debonair, computer-generated news reader Ananova debuted last week at www.ananova.com to mixed reviews.
Ananova pops up in an on-screen window with the click of the mouse, delivering a short report of international news. Her facial movements are a bit jerky, her voice somewhat robot-like.
And viewers certainly don't lack for opinions about the green-haired, 3D, animated character from the British news agency Press Association. "You should have waited till the technology was perfect before launching," said one, whose comments were posted on the site.
Wrote another: "An innovation like this should be accepted with open arms by all who love the evolution of societies and technologies."
