(Undated-AP) -- Government officials named in a lawsuit filed by gun makers are firing back.

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal calls the action "preposterous, false and unfounded and an insult to law
enforcement."

Seven gun makers claim the Department of Housing and Urban Development and 16 cities are giving Smith and Wesson preferential
treatment when it comes to buying weapons for law enforcement agencies.

The lawsuit seeks to stop the cities and HUD from buying guns for law enforcement only from companies that agree to strict safety
measures.

The head of the National Shooting Sports Foundation says the cities are bullying police into buying guns based not on quality, but to satisfy a political agenda.
