(Stillwater-AP) -- A former Oklahoma State pitcher has been sentenced to 90 days in jail and placed on five years of probation for the statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl.

Authorities say 22-year-old Dennis Lee New Junior met the girl over the Internet and that the sex was consensual and without violence. New testified he didn't know how old the girl was.

The parents of the girl wanted New to serve some prison time, but he avoided that. As part of his sentencing, he will undergo counseling.

A licensed sex offender therapist said New was not a threat to the community, that the case was a tragedy and that imprisoning him would likely serve as another one.
