(Muskogee-AP) -- Two men who were cleared by D-N-A evidence after spending 12 years in prison on murder convictions are suing prosecutors and law enforcement officials.
Dennis Fritz and Ron Williamson are seeking 100 (m) million dollars in damages for their imprisonment in the 1982 death of Debra Carter.
Carter died in her Ada apartment after a washcloth was stuffed down her throat and a ligature pulled around her neck. She also had been sexually assaulted.
The lawsuit alleges Fritz's and Williamson's civil rights were violated under the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Eighth and 14th amendments.
Williamson had been sentenced to death and Fritz to life after being convicted in 1988. A new trial in 1997 for Williamson led to the D-N-A testing that freed the men.
The lawsuit includes the Corrections Department, the city of Ada and the former Pontotoc County District Attorney as defendants.
