TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- A state appeals court has upheld the death sentence of a man who was twice convicted of killing a store clerk in 1975.
Michael B. Selsor received the death sentence in a 1998 retrial that resulted from his appeal of a life prison term for the murder of Clayton Chandler, 55.
In a 5-0 ruling issued Monday, the Court of Criminal Appeals upheld Selsor's murder conviction at the retrial and found the "sentence of death to be factually substantiated and appropriate."
Selsor originally received the death sentence in his 1976 trial. But the state's death sentence statute was later declared unconstitutional, resulting in a life sentence for Selsor.
At the 1998 retrial, Selsor also received a life term for shooting Chandler's friend and co-worker, Ina Louise Morris, who survived multiple wounds.
The appeals court affirmed that conviction but reduced the sentence to 20 years in prison because that was the maximum punishment when the crime occurred.
