WASHINGTON (AP) -- People worried that they -- or a friend -- maybe developing an alcohol problem can get some anonymous professional help Thursday.

It's the second annual National Alcohol Screening Day, with health professionals available at 1,500 sites across the nation to provide screenings.

Last year some 50,000 people took part, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

The free program is designed to teach people about alcohol use disorders, screen them for a range of problems, including risky drinking and dependence, and refer those in need to treatment resources.

People interested in attending a screening can call 1-800-405-9200 to find a site in their area. Nearby sites can also be found on the Internet at http://www.mentalhealthscreening.organd clicking on the online site locator on the right side of the screen.

Participants will hear an educational presentation on alcohol problems, complete a written self-assessment, and have the opportunity to talk privately with a health professional.

If they need further professional help, they will be given the names and telephone numbers of treatment facilities in the area.
