BUFFALO, New York (Ticker) -- The NCAA Tournament finally has its first major upset.
No. 11 Pepperdine, which barely made the field of 64 after losing its conference title game, dominated throughout in a 77-57 rout of sixth-seeded Indiana in an East Region first-round contest.
By sending the Hoosiers (20-9) home early for the sixth straight year, the Waves earned a Sunday date with third-seeded Oklahoma State.
It is the first time in seven NCAA Tournament appearances that Pepperdine (25-8) has reached the second round. It last advanced that far in 1982, suffering a 70-51 loss to Oregon State following a victory over Pittsburgh.
The Waves were the lowest-seeded team to win in the first round of an NCAA Tournament many considered the most wide-open in years. The other two upsets were No. 10 seeds over No. 7s, including Seton Hall beating Oregon here earlier today.
Brandon Armstrong scored 22 points for Pepperdine, which won the West Coast Conference regular-season title but lost to Gonzaga in overtime in the league tournament championship. Gonzaga also is still alive in the NCAA Tournament.
