Dr. John Thompson was named the new chief of Pittsburgh public schools Wednesday evening. Thompson was chosen on a seven to two vote of the Pittsburgh school board.

The vote came just a little less than a week before the Tulsa school board was to have voted whether to renew Thompson's contract.

In January, Thompson was lost his bid to become chief executive officer of the Detroit public school system.

His negotiations with the Tulsa school board ended abruptly on February 9th when a committee recommended that his contract not be renewed.

Thompson was present when the Pittsburgh school board voted Wednesday evening. That district serves 39,000 students.
