OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals on Wednesday scheduled an April 27 execution date for a man who killed a police officer 14 years ago.
Ronald Keith Boyd, 42, has been on death row since his conviction for the Jan. 7, 1986, shooting death of Richard Oldham Riggs, 32, at a service station on Interstate 35 in Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City officer was shot in the abdomen and chest after he stopped a car during an investigation of a service station robbery and asked the driver to remove his hands from his pockets.
Boyd fled on foot, but was captured the next day. The U.S. Supreme turned down Riggs' final appeal earlier this week. He is the third Oklahoma death row inmate set to be executed in the next two months.
Loyd Winfred Lafevers is scheduled to die March 9 for the 1985 slaying of 84-year-old Addie Hawley in Oklahoma City. Kelly Lamont Rogers is to be executed March 23 for the 1990 slaying of 21-year-old Karen Marie Lauffenburger in Stillwater.
