BROKEN ARROW, Okla. (AP) -- The state Medical Examiner's Office has ruled the October death of a 2-year-old Broken Arrow girl as a homicide because it found the child's injuries inconsistent with the explanation that she fell from her crib.
Shelby Renee Brown died Oct. 30. Her babysitter said she fell from a crib and hit her head on a carpeted floor. The child died two days later. Darlene Dulcinea Huey, an unlicensed day-care provider, said she heard the fall and found the child unconscious. Officers and doctors initially reported that the child's injuries were caused by an accidental fall, but doctors said the injuries were too severe to have been caused the way Huey described.
Dr. Mary Anzalone, the medical examiner who filed the autopsy report, said the toddler died from blunt trauma to the head and suffered multiple hemorrhages and brain swelling. Officers will meet with prosecutors to determine whether criminal charges should be filed.
